Why is Iron important

Our bodies need Iron, it is used by all of our cells. Iron is used to make haemoglobin - the part of our red bloods cell that carry oxygen around our bodies. It also plays a part in our muscle strength, energy and mental function. If your iron levels are low this may make you feel tired and not up to your usual daily activities. As the amount of iron in the body falls below normal, your haemoglobin levels drop this is known as anaemia or iron deficiency.

IV Iron Replacement

The most common way to treat iron deficiency is with an oral supplement in tablet or liquid form. This does work for most people and is generally the first method tried. Some people may benefit from receiving iron directly to the blood stream (IV Iron Infusion). You may need an Iron infusion if;

  • You are unable to tolerate iron tablets/liquid

  • You are nor responding or absorbing the iron from tablets/liquid

  • You need to quickly increase you iron levels (before surgery or during pregnancy)

  • If you have chronic kidney disease or heart failure

The decision to have an iron infusion needs to be made in conjunction with your treating healthcare professional

Side effects of IV Iron replacement

An iron infusion is a safe procedure, when side effects do occur they are generally mild and settle on their own. The most common side effects are

  • Headache, muscle or joint pain

  • Nausea or feeling unwell

  • Changes in taste (metallic)

  • Changes to blood pressure or heart rate

Skin discolouration or Skin staining may occur due to leakage of iron into the needle site. This is an uncommon occurrence but the stain may be long lasting or in some cases permanent. make sure you let the nurse know of any discomfort, burning, redness or swelling at the site of the needle.

Although very uncommon some patients may have a serious allergic reaction. In rare cases this may be life threatening. All patients are closely monitored during the infusion and for 30 minutes after.

On the day

You should make sure you have eaten and are fully hydrated the day of your infusion. If you are dehydrated we may not be able to insert a cannula.

You will be unable to provide care for children during and 30 minutes after the infusion. We do not provide child minding facilities.
